Future Facilities has launched 6SigmaDCX, a tool which makes computational fluid dynamics (CFC) accessible to non-experts at all stages of a data center's life, helping to make data centers which are more efficient.
6SigmaDCX can create detailed simulations of a data center environment quickly and without an expert. This means that the thermal properties of a data center can be modelled at any stage, for instance when changes are made, instead of only as a one-off part of the design process.
Solving the thermal maze"You don't have to be a thermal expert with a PhD to solve cooling problems," Future Facilities' development manager Matt Warner told Datacenter Dynamics,at the DCD Converged event in London last week.
CFD is often used at the design stage, to create data centers where heat is removed efficiently without hotspots or excessive cooling effort. However, CFD has been expensive and complex, so it is normally only used sparingly, by experts.
Future Facilities' existing product, 6SigmaDC, creates a 3D mathematical model of the data center, right down to the components in the racks, and predicts the thermal performance, but it has been seen as complex to use. This means it is not applied in all cases where it could be useful, for instance when the data center is changed in some way.
After two years' work, 6SigmaDCX has "tamed" CFD, Future Facilities says. It was developed with the help of potential customers - designers, planners and operators - and now has a more intuitive user interface. Tools include interactive tips and the virtual data center can now be built by dragging and dropping components into place.
With the new product an entire virtual data center can be built in less than an hour and be ready for testing and simulations.
